Sustainability

Tuku iho mō te whenua:
A legacy for the land.

Our values align closely with the Māori concept of Kaitiakitanga through the connection to the land and responsibility towards the environment.
On our farms, we maintain rotational grazing and use only natural supplements and fertilisers. All farm waste goes back to the land as fertiliser, and garden waste and food scraps are composted and used in the no-till gardens.
Our products are carefully created with sustainability at the heart. We use natural wool, beeswax, wood, Oamaru stone to craft unique Hōhepa products.
We have established multiple wetland and riparian areas through our projects within the community. Using eco-sourced seeds from our native plant nursery, over 90,000 native plants and trees have taken root across Hawke’s Bay. Contracts with the Department of Conservation, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, private landholders, and nurseries have enabled a successful partnership.
We have taken steps towards mitigation of carbon emissions and waste minimisation. Some of our actions include: sourcing renewable energy, the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles to our fleet, compostable packaging for our award-winning cheese, reusable and recyclable glass bottles for our fresh milk, and reusable wooden crates from our wood workshop.
Our commitment to a greener community doesn’t stop there though. Due to threats from rising oceans and climate change, we have made the difficult decision to move the vulnerable residents from our Clive location to higher ground and building purpose built, energy efficient homes in Poraiti and Napier.
We have been recognised and celebrated with a number of awards:
